Lands CS Wahome inspects Gikomba Market, urges timely completion of modern phase

Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Lands, Housing, and Urban Development, Alice Wahome, conducted a site visit to Gikomba to assess the progress of Phase II of the modern market. During the tour, she received updates on the construction and was informed by officials from the Department of Housing that the seven-story structure will be completed no later than June 2024.

The facility aims to accommodate numerous informal traders currently operating in the open market. Wahome urged the construction company to expedite the project, emphasizing the importance of meeting the specified deadline.

The Cabinet Secretary, was accompanied by Kamukunji MP Yusuf Hassan, Department of Housing officials, and leaders from Gikomba Market sectors—including Samson Wanjohi (Block Textile Market), Paul Oyimba (Fish Traders), Bonface Kavoi (Informal Market), and Fanuel Juma (Shoes Traders).

The successful completion of the first phase of the Gikomba modern market in late 2021 has already welcomed over 600 traders, including women fishmongers benefitting from improved cold storage facilities.
